Our story

Essex Marketing Services was born when founder Clare Martin realised that the agencies in and around Southend-on-Sea weren’t able to service small businesses at an affordable rate because they had such large overheads.

Talking to many of the small businesses (the majority of which were run by female entrepreneurs), it became clear that they wanted to learn how to market their business without paying a monthly (often unaffordable) retainer for businesses promising to help them get to the number one spot in Google.

She decided to set her knowledge and experience free, offering small businesses the opportunity to learn how to market themselves through free consultation sessions and action plans that they could either take onboard themselves or enlist her help to implement.

In just over a year, the team has grown to six members of staff, each with their own specialist areas. She has also developed workshops and online courses for those that want to learn in a more formal environment.

Clare Martin

Clare Martin

Clare started her career in technology journalism, first as staff writer and then moving through the ranks to become international editorial director at a major UK publisher.

She left journalism to become UK managing director at a US-based content marketing agency in 2014. After maternity leave, she decided to set up Essex Marketing Services to better service the small businesses in and around Essex.

Laura started her journalism career as a press officer, but quickly realised the importance of, what was then, the up and coming discipline of digital marketing.

She has since created numerous online communities for both national and international independent buinesses.

After maternity leave, Laura decided to freelance, now working mainly to help businesses raise their profile through a good social media community and improving website ranking both through content and technically. She also writes copy and proof reads for major online publishers.

Our team of copywriters, strategists and social media gurus have collectively spent more than 50 years in editorial, design, retail and PR.We’ve worked at large agencies in London and Essex, at brands and at magazines. We know what makes great design, great content, what customers want and how to serve it to them on a plate.
